Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has voiced concerns over Elon Musk’s approach to moderating free speech on the social media platform X, particularly regarding the use of account bans. In a post shared on December 31, 2024, Buterin acknowledged Musk’s stated commitment to free speech but called for a more balanced approach to content moderation, specifically urging Musk to avoid excessive use of account bans, which he referred to as the “banhammer.”

The comments come after Musk’s defense of U.S. companies utilizing H-1B visas to hire foreign workers, which sparked controversy among certain conservative groups on X. These groups accused Musk of censorship, despite his earlier promises to champion free speech and limit moderation. Buterin’s criticism centers on the inconsistencies in Musk’s moderation practices, which have evolved since he took over Twitter (now X).

Buterin also pointed to the inherent contradictions in Musk’s stance, noting that while Musk has advocated for a broader interpretation of free speech, the heavy-handed approach to banning users contradicts those ideals. Buterin’s remarks reflect a broader debate within the tech and cryptocurrency communities about the balance between protecting freedom of expression and preventing harm on online platforms.

Musk, who has faced significant backlash over his management of X, has yet to respond publicly to Buterin’s comments. However, Buterin’s call for moderation is likely to resonate with other users who have expressed concerns about Musk’s leadership and the platform’s direction under his ownership.
