Meta and Anduril Collaborate on AI-Powered Mixed-Reality Headsets for U.S. Military
Meta has partnered with defense contractor Anduril to develop advanced mixed-reality headsets for the U.S. military, aiming to enhance battlefield awareness and decision-making through integrated artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) technologies.
The inaugural device from this collaboration, named “EagleEye,” is designed to provide soldiers with real-time intelligence by integrating data from thousands of sources via Anduril’s AI-powered command and control system, the Lattice platform. This integration is intended to offer enhanced perception and intuitive control of autonomous platforms during missions .
Palmer Luckey, co-founder of Anduril and former Oculus VR founder, described the partnership as a step toward transforming U.S. soldiers into “technomancers,” emphasizing the goal of equipping warfighters with cutting-edge technology to improve operational effectiveness.
Funding for the project is sourced from private capital, with the intention of leveraging components and technologies initially developed for commercial applications and repurposing them for military use .
This initiative follows the U.S. Army’s reassignment of a $22 billion augmented reality contract from Microsoft to Anduril earlier this year, after Microsoft’s HoloLens-based project faced challenges. Anduril has since taken over the development and production of the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS), aiming to provide soldiers with improved situational awareness through AR overlays .
Meta’s involvement in defense technology has been growing, with the company previously opening its large language model, Llama, to U.S. military and defense contractors for national security purposes. This collaboration with Anduril marks a significant step in Meta’s integration into military applications, combining its expertise in VR and AR with Anduril’s defense solutions.
The development of EagleEye and similar technologies reflects a broader trend of tech companies contributing to national defense initiatives, blending commercial innovation with strategic military needs.
